For the past one and one half years we have been working on an audio signal analysis project.  This project uses several Microchip microcontrollers to allow for complete standalone or PC controlled operation of the analyzer, the creation of audio signals for speaker output, and analysis of the signal from the speakers to maintain correct frequency and output level parameters.

It started out as a small project attempting to use the PIC18 for all processing.  Unfortunately we ran out of processing power and memory fairly quickly and had to go back to the drawing board again.  Additionally there was a multitude of hardware on the board in an attempt to do all signal processing via hardware.  Phase 2 of the project added the dsPIC33 to perform all necessary audio signal control and processing.  Phase 3 added the PIC24F so that a graphics display with touch screen could be utilised instead of the standard mono alpha-numeric display used in prior versions.

This project uses the following Microchip Microcontrollers -
  • PIC18F2550 as a USB gateway to the PC controller allowing the PC controller application to communicate with the firmware and to update firmware with newer versions as they become available
  • PIC24FJ128GA010 to control use of the graphical display and touch screen
  • dsPIC33FJ256GP to control audio signal output and analyze audio input signals.

 


All firmware is written using Microchip's C compilers and the Microchip MPLAB Integrated Development Environment (IDE).  Other Microchip firmware components used are -
